A Postpartum doula cares for the mother and her family in their home during the first few weeks following the birth. A doula provides non-medical support and companionship, assists with newborn care, meal preparation and household organization. During this time of transition, it can be very helpful to have an extra pair of hands. There are many changes and demands put on parents with the arrival of a new baby. A doula can offer the support needed so the mom can focus on her recovery from the birth, as well as focus on the needs of the new baby. A doula’s care is individually tailored to meet the emotional and practical needs of the family. While services vary from family to family, in many cases, the most valuable services includes a listening ear and a supportive presence that enables the mother to take a much-needed nap or shower. A postpartum doula usually serves for a few weeks following the birth; however, in special cases, especially involving multiple babies or a mother with a postpartum mood disorder, postpartum care potentially lasts for several months.
